NASA selected Blue Origin to develop and operate a Mars communications network intended to support higher-bandwidth data, navigation and future exploration missions.

NASA has selected Blue Origin to build a Mars communications orbiter, moving a key piece of future exploration infrastructure from planning toward 2028 delivery now.

NASA has selected Blue Origin for a firm-fixed-price contract worth up to about $700 million to develop the Mars Telecommunications Network. The agency said the award calls for a high-performance telecommunications orbiter to be delivered no later than Dec. 31, 2028. Blue Origin will design, develop, integrate, launch and operate the network under the contract. NASA expects the system to be operating at Mars by 2030.

The planned spacecraft is meant to orbit Mars and relay science data, imagery, navigation information and mission communications for vehicles operating on and around the planet. NASA describes the network as a next-generation communications system for current and future Mars missions. Blue Origin calls its contribution a Mars Telecommunications Orbiter and says it is intended to provide high-speed, near-continuous coverage between Mars assets and controllers on Earth. The practical point is capacity: missions cannot return more information than their communications links can move.

NASA said demand for data will grow as robotic missions expand and as the agency prepares for eventual human exploration of Mars. The agency said the purpose-built network is intended to add capacity, reliability and operational flexibility. That makes this more than a single scientific instrument or one-off mission purchase. It is infrastructure meant to support other spacecraft and the information they send home.

The award also extends NASA’s broader move toward commercial space communications services. In May, NASA issued its request for proposals after a draft solicitation and an industry day at Goddard Space Flight Center. The agency framed the procurement as part of its Space Communications and Navigation program’s Moon to Mars strategy. Blue Origin said the orbiter will be built on its Blue Ring spacecraft platform, which the company says is already in production in Huntsville, Alabama.

The contract award does not mean a new Mars relay is already flying. The central benchmarks remain delivery to NASA by the end of 2028 and operation at Mars by 2030. NASA will need the spacecraft and its services to meet those milestones before the network can carry mission traffic. For now, the selection gives the agency a commercial provider and a defined schedule for a new piece of Mars exploration infrastructure.

The announcement is a reminder that the next phase of Mars exploration depends on systems that are less visible than landers and rovers. Communications, navigation and data relay determine how much those missions can do once they reach the planet. NASA is now betting that a commercial provider can help build that backbone on the timetable it has set.
